Keith Cassidy's first words to me after the game tonight were "You drove up here for THAT?"
And there's no doubting that the Bruins' performance in a 3-1 loss to Notre Dame was a disappointment.
Facing a team that wasn't expected to do very well this year and on a big ice surface that should have made for a wide-open, exciting game, the Bruins came out flat and recorded a grand total of nine shots through two periods.
They turned up the heat in the third, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome a three-goal deficit. Austin Yano drove one home from the point on a third period power play, his first SJHL goal.
Brandon Millin scored twice for the Hounds in the second period and Dayton Shaw scored later in the frame. One goal was on a power play and the other two were right after they had expired.
Millin opened the scoring early in the second on a play that never should have been allowed to happen. Millin walked out from the right side of Derek Tendler and roofed a backhander, completely untouched.
His second goal came on a shot from the slot and Shaw later tapped in a rebound that Tendler couldn't get to in time.
Ben Johnstone and Denin Boesch each drew in for their first SJHL game while newcomers Austin Daae and Ryan Crosson also suited up.
I was impressed with Crosson. I wasn't sure what to expect from him offensively, but he carried the puck with poise and made a couple of smart pinches. He logged a lot of minutes and, if he keeps it up, will really take some pressure off the Bruins' younger defencemen.
For Notre Dame, rookie goalie Ty Reichenbach was outstanding, especially in the third when Estevan was throwing everything at him.
Keith wasn't happy with his team's effort and had some choice words for them following the game. There's also an interview with Austin Daae.
